Amazon Jungle Lodge

Route: Cuzco - Puerto Maldonado - Lima

A stay in the Amazonian jungle is a great way to round off your Peru trip. No more long days of travelling and the warm, tropical rainforest makes a nice change to the thin air of the mountain plateaus. This is a chance to experience the quintessential Amazonian jungle and some of the most unspoiled, dense rainforest you’ll find anywhere in the country.

Your Amazon jungle lodge lies tucked away deep among the green jungle giants, on the banks of the rivers Madres de Dios and Tambopata. To get to the lodge, you’ll travel up the river by motorised canoe and, as you sail into the rainforest, you’ll catch your first glimpse of the exotic birds, water mammals and monkeys that live here. On your jungle expedition, you’ll go in search of giant otters, jaguars, anteaters and caimans. Travelling by canoe, you’ll spot wildlife, visit local villagers and you’ll go on a night walk through the deep, dark rainforest.

Day 1: Cuzco - Tambopata Nature Reserve

Time to get to the airport for the 25 minute flight to Puerto Maldonado. This lively jungle border town is a popular base for tours into the Amazonian jungle. You’ll be dropped off at the harbour where you can repack your bags for the next couple of days. Step into the small motorised canoe and head up the river into the jungle, where your Peru trip will really begin. Your Amazon jungle lodge is built on the banks of the river and is made using local materials like wood, clay and reed. The jungle lodge has 15-20 rooms, a reception, bar, large dining room and several covered verandas.

The large rooms have clay walls to keep the room as cool as possible. The beds are made of (local) wood and have a mosquito net. There’s a private bathroom with shower, toilet, hot water and there’s a fan. In the evening, dinner is served in the large dining room. The menu includes international as well as traditional Peruvian and vegetarian dishes. After dinner, head back to the veranda of your Amazon jungle lodge and listen to the exotic sounds of the jungle.

Day 2-3: Tambopata, outdoor activities

On day 2 of your Amazon jungle lodge itinerary, you'll have an early start to see the colourful spectacle of “clay picking” parrots. Every day, early in the morning, hundreds of parrots of various species and sizes gather around the 50m high wall to fight over the best spots to pick river clay, a vital source of their daily diet. The show includes large groups of parakeets and huge aras.

After your morning adventure, you'll continue your Peru trip and take a guided canoe trip up the river to spot caimans, giant otters, tortoises and other animals that live in and along the water. As the sun begins to set, a tropical dip in the water is irresistible so be sure to bring your swimming gear!

After dinner, there’s a late-evening canoe trip, in which you’ll go in search of black caiman. Gliding up the river in the pitch black, you suddenly spot a pair of red eyes reflecting in the guide’s torch. There’s a caiman lurking in the water and remember, the further apart the eyes, the bigger the head and hence, the rest of the animal…

On day three of your Amazon jungle lodge tour, you'll head out early in the morning to spot the giant otter. Hopefully, you'll spot the entire otter family as they’re most active at this time of day. Besides otters, you’ll also see lots of water birds busy gathering their daily meals along the river.

Your tour continues with a flora and fauna trek. In a small group, you’ll head into the dense jungle accompanied by a local guide, who can tell you all about the animals of the rainforest. You’ll learn all about the local wildlife, but also about the medicinal properties of the plants and trees- sure to be a highlight of your Peru trip. You'll be amazed by how the locals use the plants to build houses and even make clothing.

In the afternoon, you'll take a trip to a local “slash and burn” farm to see how the land here is cultivated. Back at the lodge, relax in your hammock as toucans, aras and humming birds fly overhead.

If you like, you can spend this evening relaxing at your Amazon jungle lodge, but you can also join in a night walk into the jungle in search of snakes, lizards, frogs and creepy crawlies like tarantulas, crickets and grasshoppers. It’s incredible how the guide can tell the difference between all the sounds as they manage to spot the tiniest animal hidden in the foliage, whilst you can hardly even make out the person in front of you in the pitch dark!
