La Paz trip - High altitude city in the Andes

Easy Going La Paz

La Paz starter pack

As soon as you arrive in La Paz everything about the city will make you feel as if you've arrived in a very special place. The city is hidden away in a deep gorge at an altitude of 4000m and surrounded by the snow-covered mountain peaks of the Andes. The thin air at this altitude and the mesmerising view will literally and figuratively take your breath away. We recommend taking it easy for at least a day after arriving from a lower lying area to allow your body to adjust to the altitude during this La Paz trip.

La Paz is sheltered from the Altiplano wind by the surrounding Altiplano mountains. The city's sunny climate, people wearing bowler hats, the colonial churches and the colourful Indian markets are all entirely Bolivian.

Day 1: Arrival in La Paz

The actual time and place of your arrival depends on where you're coming from. In any case, a transfer will be waiting for you at the bus station or at the airport. A driver will take you to your accommodation.

We will make reservations for you at a colonial hotel in the centre of La Paz, within walking distance from the Witch's Market and the San Francisco Cathedral. The hotel rooms surround a small courtyard and have en-suite bathrooms, heating and extra blankets on the beds. If you have any valuables that must be kept safe or laundry that needs to be washed, you can give these to the reception staff. An internet café and an ATM are located near the hotel. The hotel has a homey restaurant where you can sit down to hearty breakfast and drink a few cups of coca tea - to help relieve altitude sickness so that you can enjoy your La Paz trip.

 Day 2: La Paz trip

Since it's impossible to know ahead of time how your body will react to the altitude, there are no activities planned for today. If you feel okay, you can walk through the city and enjoy your La Paz trip at your own pace. Your hotel's reception desk can give you a map with walking directions. Keep in mind the map won't show you how steep the city's streets are. The sun is bright but when it's hidden behind a cloud the temperature seems to drop at least 5 degrees. It's best to wear layers of warm clothing and sunscreen. The Coca Museum is the most interesting museum in La Paz. You can also stroll through the city's squares and street markets and watch people walking by in bowler hats and colourful wide skirts.Your La Paz trip isn't complete without a visit to the witch's market. You'll see knitted hats with llama motif, sweaters made out of llama wool, llama rugs and other souvenirs and even llama foetuses. According to the superstitious Bolivians llama foetuses bring happiness.

Done with sightseeing in La Paz? Extend your stay to go on one of the following day trips. They range from slow going to active adventure trips.

- World's most dangerous road: mountain bike ride from high in the Andes down to the palms. It can be booked in advance, but it's better to wait and see how the altitude affects you first and then book it with our local agent.
- Chacaltaya: minibus ride through the mountains to the world's highest ski slope, 1 hour from La Paz at 5230m. You'll see Lake Titicaca, La Paz and snowy mountain peaks, including Bolivia's highest peak Illimani at 6400m.
- Tiwanaku: most important Bolivian Inca ruins, most of which are still hidden.
- Valle de la Luna: Moon Valley, is more or less a suburb of La Paz and a great place to spend a morning. You can get there by a taxi. It will take about an hour to walk through lunar landscape of eroded rocks.

Day 3: Departure from La Paz

Today marks the end of your La Paz trip. Most travellers choose to travel south from La Paz to the famous Salar de Uyuni salt plains.

Continue travelling with our intense 6-day Bolivian salt flats tour, Flamingos and volcanoes, you'll travel by jeep through Southern Bolivia's inhospitable terrain. Our Uyuni tour, Sugar and salt tour from La Paz, is a shorter and more comfortable version of the Bolivian salt flats tour but without several stunning lagoons and landscapes.

If you would like to continue travelling to Peru, you can travel via Copacabana with our Puno to La Paz Isla del Sol tour, In search of the sun god, and spend the night there or head straight for the floating reed islands on Lake Titicaca go with our Lake Titicaca tour, Typically Titicaca.

Or fly from La Paz to the Bolivian Amazon and spot wild animals during our Madidi National Park, Swimming with the caimans. You'll even get a chance to go swimming in a lake of caimans. You can also go on a Bolivia adventure tour, amongst the pampas.
